Veres Palne - Our Inspiration

Veres Palne (1815-1895) was a visionary educationalist, known for promoting women’s rights, opening the first secondary school for women in Hungary and founding the Hungarian National Association for Women’s Education.

The Life of Veres Palne

Hermin Beniczky was born in Hungary in 1815 and was brought up in Nograd County north of Budapest. She was educated in Hungary and Switzerland and at twenty-four married Pal Veres (thereby becoming Veres Palne), a political leader and later a Member of Parliament in Budapest. Veres Palne dedicated her life to the cause of women, free education for orphans and disadvantaged children, women’s higher education in science, art, languages and sport and how to become a woman, a wife and a mother. This remarkable person, driven and guided by her Christian faith, inner strength and instincts, sowed the seed in Hungary for women’s education and the elevation of women’s rights.

The BENICZKY Kuria

In the 1830s several large residences were built by the Beniczky family in the villages of Vanyarc and Szugy in northern Hungary. The Foundation is aiming to restore one of these Kurias; this beautiful building now has a new destiny and a worthwhile future in good hands.
